Most people buy a disposable tablecloth the way they buy a bin liner — by guessing. Then it either rides up at the corners mid-dinner or pools on the floor where guests trip over it. The fix takes two minutes with a tape measure.
Step 1: measure the tabletop, not the table
For a round table, measure straight across the centre. For a rectangle, measure both the long and short sides. Write both numbers down in inches — that is the number every product listing quotes.
Step 2: decide the drop
The drop is how far the cloth hangs past the edge. There are three useful ranges:
- 6–8 inches — casual and food-service. Keeps the cloth off the floor and out of the way.
- 10–12 inches — the standard for parties and banquets. Looks intentional in photographs.
- 15+ inches (floor length) — formal. Only worth it for a seated, plated dinner, and it needs a table skirt if you want a clean line.
Step 3: match the shape
A round cover on a rectangular table leaves the corners bare, and a rectangular cover on a round table bunches at the curves. Buy the shape that matches the tabletop — a round cover cut in a true circle drapes evenly in every direction, which is why they are the default for banquet rounds.
The common sizes, in plain terms
- 84" round — fits a 60–72 inch round table with a proper drop. The standard banquet size.
- 54 × 108" — the workhorse. Covers a 6–8 foot folding table completely, with overhang on both ends.
- Cover rolls — 54 inch wide film on a slide cutter, for buffets, bar tops and odd-length tables.
Why gauge matters more than size
A correctly sized cover in thin film still tears the moment you pull it tight at the corner. Heavier PE film holds tension, which is what keeps the drop looking even after guests have been leaning on the table for two hours. If a cover feels like a grocery bag, it will behave like one.
